The University of Southampton proudly participated in the 17th Universities High Voltage Colloquium (UHVNet 2025), held at the University of Liverpool from 2nd to 3rd June 2025. This annual event brings together leading researchers and emerging scholars in the field of high-voltage engineering from across the UK.

This year, Southampton was represented by Professor George ChenDr Igor Golosnoy, and two PhD students — Jing Nan and Ibrahim Khan. Both professors were invited to serve as judges for student oral and poster presentations, underlining Southampton’s academic leadership in the field.

Professor George Chen was also invited as a keynote speaker and delivered a talk on “Semicon for Polypropylene-Based Cable Systems for HVDC Medium Voltage Applications”, which received great interest from attendees.

PhD student Jing Nan delivered an oral presentation titled “Impact of Moving Velocity and Magnetic Field on Arc Interruption Dynamics in Low-Voltage DC Switching Devices”. The work, conducted under the supervision of Professor George Chen and Dr Igor Golosnoy, and in collaboration with Ph.D. student Mingli Yan and Professor Suleiman Sharkh from the Mechanical Engineering school was recognized with the Best Student Oral Presentation Award, one of only three awards presented at the event.

First-year PhD student Ibrahim Khan also presented a poster on his research and attracted positive attention and encouraging feedback from experts, marking a promising start to his academic journey.

Southampton’s strong showing at UHVNet 2025 reflects the University’s continued excellence in high-voltage research and the collaborative spirit between universities.
