The Electrical Power Engineering Group held its 2026 Research Away Day at Audleys Wood Hotel, Basingstoke, bringing together researchers, academics and students for a full day of technical presentations, posters, discussion and group activities.

The event opened with a welcome speech from Professor Paul Lewin, followed by a series of research presentations covering the breadth of current activity across EPE. Topics included:

  • phasor-domain data-driven control of permanent magnet synchronous machines
  • stability assessment of virtual synchronous generators
  • grid-following and grid-forming inverter stability
  • fibre-optic condition monitoring for subsea power cables
  • dielectric performance of FDM-printed polypropylene composites
  • the electrical, mechanical and thermal properties of partially bio-based polypropylene materials.

The programme also included work on overhead line insulation, high-speed traction induction motors, and multi-agent coordination of multi-energy buildings.

A dedicated lunch and poster session provided an opportunity for researchers to share their work in a more informal setting, encouraging discussion across different areas of electrical power engineering. The afternoon programme continued with further presentations, a group activity, a CRAFT session, and closing remarks with awards.

The Away Day highlighted the diversity and strength of research across EPE, from high-voltage insulation and sustainable materials to power electronics, machines, monitoring technologies and future energy systems. It also provided an important opportunity for colleagues to exchange ideas, strengthen collaboration and celebrate the achievements of researchers across the group.
